Dev log: the cellar in 3D

A vessel register is a list. A cellar is a room, with tanks along one wall and barriques racked three high behind them. The new 3D view in the cellar module draws that room, so the screen matches what you see when you walk in.

Loading the 3D cellar…
Demo cellar with made-up data. Read-only: the layout editor is only in the app.

What you are looking at

Every vessel in the register stands in the room at its real size: the shape is scaled from its capacity, so a 10,000 l tank towers over a 225 l barrique without anyone drawing either one. Steel tanks get a dished top, a cone on legs, a manway door and a sight glass. Barriques use a CC0 barrel model.

Switch on X-ray and the shells turn see-through, with the contents drawn inside:

  • White, rosé and red wine each have their own colour; grapes on a lot are olive.
  • An empty vessel is just an outline.
  • A vessel holding more than its capacity gets a red tint. It is a warning, not an error, the same as in the register.

The fill levels are not stored in the 3D view. They come from the current contents of each vessel, which the cellar movements keep up to date, so the room always shows the book.

The detail that took the longest

For an upright tank, half the volume means half the height. For a barrel on its side it doesn't: a quarter-full barrique is filled to about 30% of its height, not 25%, because the cross-section is a circle. The view solves the circular-segment formula for every lying vessel, so the wine line in the picture sits where the dipstick would find it.

In the app

  • Auto-arrange. Before anyone places a vessel, the cellar is laid out in tidy rows: tanks in front, casks behind, barriques stacked three high.
  • Layout editor. Drag a vessel to where it really stands. It snaps to the floor or onto the vessel underneath on a 25 cm grid, and the vertical arrow sets the height.
  • Add a vessel from the room. Pick a shape, give it a number and a capacity, and it appears on the nearest free spot.
  • Camera presets. Overview, top-down and aisle (eye height from the front of the cellar), plus a presentation mode that slowly orbits the room.
  • Summary strip. Vessel count, total capacity and the litres in vessels split by wine colour. Grapes are shown in kg beside it and never added to the litres.

You find the 3D view in the vessel register (3D view). It is part of the cellar module (Kellerbuchhaltung), which is switched on per account. If you would like it enabled, get in touch.
